The Gligoric Cup!!!
Last Updated 02/13/07
FRCEC was founded on
Svetozar Gligoric is the acclaimed journalist and Grandmaster, who
wrote "Shall We Play Fischerandom Chess?", the first book ever published on FRC.
The Gligoric Cup is a tournament open to all FRCEC members
(not playing in the Fischer Cup).
The first 11 players to register in the Gligoric Cup will
first play in a single game round robin tournament. Each player will play 5
games as white and 5 games as black. A perfect score in the round robin will be
10 points.
The top 4 players in the round robin will play in the
Gligoric Cup's Playoff!
Tie breaker games might be necessary to determine the top 4
players of the Round Robin round.
In case of a 2-way or 3 way tie for 2nd place,
the 2nd place winner will be selected as follows:
1.
By the best result in
the games between the tied players in the Round Robin.
2.
By the individual
result in the Round Robin against the player who finished 1st over
all.
3.
By the highest rating
of the tied players at the beginning of the tournament.
4.
By a tie-breaker game
If clause number 1 above doesn’t determine the 2nd
place finisher, then clause 2 is used; if clause 2 is not enough to determine
the 2nd place finisher, then clause 3 is used, and so forth.
In case of a 3-way tie for 3th
place, the player with the best result in the games between the three players
will finish 3rd place overall, and the remaining two players will
play a tie breaker game for the 4th spot.
In case of a 2-way tie for 4th place, a tie
breaker game will be played to decide the 4th place in the Round
Robin round.
Tie breaker games will be played with opposite colors to
the game played between the players in the Round Robin.
Every game in the Gligoric Cup is meant to start with a
different starting position (but a few repeated starting positions are
possible).
The Gligoric Cup’s playoff will use the Page Playoff
System, described below:
Quarterfinal Round:
1st vs 2nd place match: Winner
goes to Final, loser goes to Semi-Final
3rd vs 4th place match: Winner
goes to Semi-Final, loser is eliminated
Semi-Final Match:
Loser of 1st-2nd vs Winner of
3rd-4th
Championship/Final Match:
Winner of 1st-2nd vs
Winner of Semi-Final Match
The Page playoff system gives credit to the top two players
in the round robin by giving them a 1 in 2 chance to play in the Final; while
the 3rd and 4th place players have to fight off for a spot in the Semi-Final,
therefore eliminating the possibility of a 3rd vs 4th
Final game. One of the top two players in the round robin will always play for
the Gligoric Cup.
Every match in the playoffs will consist of 2 games, one as
white and one as black. In case of a tie score (1-1) the lower rated player
will advance, except for the Final match. In case of a tie in the Final a
Tie-breaker game will be played, with the lower rated player playing white.
Games in the Round Robin and Playoffs will be played in all
chess servers supported by FRCEC
simultaneously (i.e. a player might play in the round robin 4 games in SchemingMind, 3 in E4EC, 1 in Chess Variants and 2 in BrainKing)
